★ Good to Know ★
How do I pronounce Pasquerilla?
Pasquerilla is pronounced PASS-KER-IL-LUH (like vanilla).
What’s up with the fire alarm?
The fire alarms are pretty finicky, so be careful with anything that has steam (drying/styling your hair, using the microwave, etc.). If using heat on your hair, we recommend doing it in the bathroom to avoid setting off the alarm. In addition, burning popcorn has also caused a 3am fire drill or two, so if that happens, please open a window or go outside! In case of a real fire, there are fire extinguishers on each level in all of the stairwells, the alarm will be set off, and you should evacuate. Planned fire drills happen approximately once a month.
Does PE have hall storage?
Past the chapel and hallway with the trash receptacles on the ground floor, there are two rooms (one for A-side and one for B-side) where you can store suitcases. However, there is no storage allowed there for other items, such as ladders or futons. If you need to store something over the summer, you will have to utilize a storage facility in the South Bend area.
Where can I practice music?
In the hallway near the storage rooms, there is a music room with soundproofed walls for practicing music! There is also a piano in the chapel, but please be mindful of others if you decide to practice there.
How does the kitchen work?
In order to use the kitchen, you should reserve a slot on the form that our rector will send out early in the year. The kitchen has most baking utensils, such as spatulas, pans, cutting boards, and baking sheets. Make sure you wash all the dishes and turn off appliances before you leave, and try not to take any of the utensils for too long! For example, if you bake brownies in a pan and want to bring it to your room, you can. However, try to be mindful of how long you have it, and return it to the kitchen as soon as you can so that others can use the brownie pan, too.
Does the dorm have cable or streaming services?
Notre Dame provides cable from DirecTV through watchtv.nd.edu. Go to the website, then click the upper left-hand corner to browse channels while connected to eduroam wifi. In addition, the Family Room TV is logged into almost every streaming service that you can think of: Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, etc.
Does PE have a printer?
PE has a black-and-white printer in the Family Room on the main floor by the pool table.
Where do I do my laundry?
Laundry is also on the main floor, and it should be free, but you will need to bring your own detergent, dryer sheets, etc. Should you need one, every bathroom has an ironing board.
What’s an e-lounge?
E-lounge stands for elevator lounge. Each floor’s e-lounge has a microwave, toaster, and sink (no microwaves/toasters allowed in individual rooms).
Will I get close to the people in the dorm?
Yes! You will absolutely grow close to the people in PE. That's what the dorm communities are for! However, it's important to remember that it's totally okay if you don't find your best friends in your section. It's okay if your best friends end up being in another dorm, too! It's also okay if your roommate isn't your soulmate. We promise everything will work out!
What are parietals?
Ah, parietals. One of the greatest and most classic traditions here at Notre Dame. Parietals simply means that no one in a men's dorm may be in the residential areas of a women's dorm and vice versa during this time. During the week (Sunday night-Thursday night), these hours are from 12am-9am, and on weekends (Friday and Saturday night) these hours are 2am-9am. However, this isn't to say that they have to completely leave PE and go home past these times! If you're working on a group project, hanging out with friends, or simply just in the middle of a great movie, there are plenty of places on the first floor of PE where you and your friends/boyfriend are more than welcome to stay for as long as you'd like. These are called 24-hour zones, and every dorm has them!

Helpful Tips for First Years
We've compiled a document with a bunch of useful tips that people are always confused about when they arrive on campus! Here's the link. Since it's a google doc, make sure to view it with your ND gmail.
ND "Hacks"
Here are some tips and tricks to make living in your home under the Dome a little easier!
- At Cafe de Grasta (conveniently located in Grace Hall i.e. 3 steps from PE) if you bring a reusable mug you can get Starbucks brewed coffee cheaper than if you actually went to Starbucks. It's also a great place to grab breakfast on the way to Stepan Center for those early morning exams and a great place to get the best chicken wraps on campus!
- Geddes Hall (the Center for Social Concern) and the Wellness Center are fantastic places to study. They even have free coffee and study snacks!
- DomerDollars and Flex Points are not the same. DomerDollars are basically the same as money, just loaded on your ID.
- Almost everything in your room can be fixed with some duct tape, poster putty, and command hooks.
- If you have a bike, keep a plastic bag in your bag - that way if it rains you can stay dry! And bring a U-lock instead of a cable lock.
- To save printing points, print multiple pages to one side of paper, especially if printing class notes/PowerPoints.
- If you plan to get a job on campus, you will need your birth certificate or passport for HR stuff. They don't accept copies!
- Before buying textbooks at the bookstore check online for a cheaper version or a PDF.
- There is a noticeable ebb and flow of people in the dining hall. One word of advice: avoid South MWF at 12:20pm and TR at 12:15 pm.
- Download the ND Mobile app to check computer lab availability and laundry availability, sport scores, weather, bus schedules, and of course, dinning hall menus!
Things they Forget to Tell Freshmen
- Memorize your student ID number. You will need to write it down on exams, various forms, and if you ever forget your ID when swiping in at the dining hall!
- Know the Notre Dame Victory March and the Alma Mater by heart.
- You should never have to spend real money on food anywhere. Besides the Flex Points and meal swipes offered in your meal plan, there are countless opportunities for free food on campus. You just have to search for them!
- You will immediately have extreme dining hall pride towards either North or South.
- Caution: People here are ridiculously friendly, and what's more, it's contagious. Symptoms of friendliness include, but are not limited to: opening doors, smiling, and giving salutations. Friendliness is not perilous and is benign, but is frequently contracted to the most severe extent.
